Mr. Gus Bounds welcomes us.
Gus Bounds, 89 years old, WWII Marine Vet, former professional boxer, cutting his sugar cane to make syrup. They just don't make 'em like this anymore! —
Sugar cane stalks go into the mill, which squeezes the juice out.
Sweet cane juice enters the cooking pan.
Tending the boiling juice
with Walter Anderson.
The fire under the pan is kept hot!
Sweet, brown syrup ready to eat!
Steve Bounds pours up the finished
product very carefully. Hot!
Bees and yellow jackets enjoyed
the sweet stuff -- some paid
the ultimate price!
